Discovery of gold

A
  • Discovered in the Witwatersrand Ridge in 1886.
    • This was the world’s largest deposit of gold-bearing ore
  • Made the Transvaal rich – a threat to British control of South Africa, especially as many Boers still lived in the Cape Colony and Natal
    • However, the Transvaal lacked manpower and an industrial base to develop their goldmines
  • This attracted an influx of foreign settlers, called ‘Uitlanders’ (outlanders)
    • By the 1890s, they had outnumbered the native Afrikaans speakers and most of the Transvaal’s wealth was in their hands
