Background Flashcards

1
Q

Key Lipids and their use

A

Cholesterol: LIPOPROTEINS, bile acids, steroids

Triglycerides: stored energy in fat tissue

What are chylomicrons?

A

Package up triglycerides and cholesterol to transport to liver

Mostly made up of TG’s

Q

What does the LDL receptor do?

A

Bring cholesterol into the cell

Removes VLDL and LDL

Decreases TG’s and cholesterol in circulation

Q

Which are the good and bad cholesterol’s?

A

Bad = LDL: carry cholesterol to cells

Q

How do you calculate LDL?

What are normal values?

A

LDL = TC - HDL - (TG/5)

Total cholesterol = <200
LDL = <130
HDL = >40-50
TG = <150

Q

Why target LDL??

A

Once taken up into cells, LDL is oxidized and can stimulate an inflammatory response

Q

What’s an atherosclerotic lesion?

What’s the significance of cap thickness?

A

Large lipid core with macrophages and poorly formed fibrous cap

Thin fibrous cap = rupture risk of releasing large lipid pool and many inflammatory cells into lumen of artery
