Back to basic physics Flashcards
what is matter
matter is anything that takes up space
an objects
what is the weight of an object
this is the force of gravity acting upon the objects mass and it is measured in newtons NOT KG
weight= mass x gravitational field strength(9.8)
what is potential energy
this is energy stored in an object due to its position or state
what is kinetic energy
this is the energy an object possesses when in motion
what is work done on an object
this is when force is applied to an object causing it to move
Work done = force x distance
what is density of an object
this is the amount of mass ann object has per unit volume
density = mass/volume
what is heat
this is the transfer of energy from one object of matter to the other
what is heat transfer
this occurs due to a difference of temperature between 2 objects (temperature gradient)
heat will flow from objects of higher temperatures to objects of lower temperatures until the temperature of both object of matter are equal
(refer to the 2nd law of thermodynamics)
what is conduction
this is the heat transfer that occurs when particles of a substance collide
conduction occurs in solids
what is convection
this is when particles of gasses and liquids closest to the heat source are heated by conduction causing them to rise
an example would be heating water in a pan on a stove
what is radiation
this is the heat transfer that occurs when a wave hits an object
when a wave hits an object, it transfers kinetic energy to the object causing its temperature to rise
(this is how we feel heat from the sun)
