Insertion: Mastoid process of temporal bone, lateral third of superior nuchal line

Innervation: dorsal rami of middle cervical nerves

Action: Bilaterally- extend head; Unilaterally- laterally bends (flexes) and rotates face to same side

Blood supply: descending branch of occipital artery, deep cervical artery
