How to change a baby’s diaper?

A

Step 1: place the baby on a clean/soft surface or chaning table. Always keep one hand on the baby so they don’t roll/squirm.

Step 2: Open up the diaper and clean the baby. For the wet diaper fold the dirty diaper underneath the baby. For a poppy diaper wipe as much as possible with the diaper itself then fold it underneath. Life the legs and clean the babys front with warm water/wipes. Then lift both legs legs and clean the baby’s bottom. Once the diaper area is cleaned pat the baby dry beforre putting on a clean diaper. gently retract any extra skin near the top.

Step 3: wrap the diaper into a ball, using a tab fastener to secure. Then throw in the garbage.

They don’t really need it unless they have a rash. You can use petroleum jelly or a zinc oxide cream. Always make sure the baby’s bottom is dry wait a couplee minutes before applying the ointment.

A

What is colic carrying?

A

Try to first relieve the gas if the baby is crying inconsolably. If this doesn’t work, lay the baby on it’s tummy on your forearm, cradle the head in your hand and use the other hand to stabalize them and rub their back. Also can try laying them tummy down across your lap with one of your knees under their stomach and the other supporting their head or even the third method you can try is holding them upright, with their abodmen on your should and rub/pat their back. Lastly, try putting them on their back and push their knees up to their tummy for 10 seconds then release and repeat until there’s a burp.

Milia- common little white bumps can show up on the nose, chin, or cheeks but will eventually disappear.

Heat Rash - reddish spots and a rash on the face, neck and torso a cool bath is the best treatment and avoid powders or lotions

Infant Eczema - itchy and uncomfortable rash thats usually dry and flaky. A gentle lotion on damp skin can help baby eczems.

  2. Keep it protected - a bandage with pertroleum jelly may be placed on the penis that usually falls off when he pees. If advised to smear a dab of petroleum jelly on the tip of the penis before re wrapping a little gauze or bandage around it so it doesn’t stick to the skin
  3. Make sure it heals properly - its okay if the tip is a bit red so it yellowish oozing, and even a tad bit of blood is fine.

  5. Keep it toasy by making sure the room is warm enough (23-26 degrees). You can warm a washcloth on the baby’s exposed parts such as the tummy. Whether using an infant tub/sink, fill it first with water (enough to cover the bottom of their body).
  6. Gently slide the baby into the tub, feet first, holding her securely with one of your arms under her head (use your hand to grasp her underarm farthest away from you) and the other supporting her bottom. Avoid letting the baby sit too long in water - it can irrate the skin.
  7. Pick a mild soap and focus on their hands and nd diaper area when you’re bathing. You can just use water on the rest of her body most days, unless they’re really dirty.
  8. Dip the washcloth in warm water and wash the neck and torso. Maneuver carefully around the umbilical cord if there’s still a stump; it’s okay to gently wipe away any crustiness around it. Next, clean under her arms and between her fingers. Be sure to get into those little creases and skin folds.
  9. Use a soft, clean cloth, gentle soap, and lukewarm water to clean your baby’s genitals. For a circumcised boy wipe the penis clean.
  10. If they have hair use water and a tiny bit of shampoo, lather your baby’s scalp. Massage it with the pads of your fingers, including the area over the fontanelles (soft spots) on the top of the head.
  11. Don’t force a bath.
  12. Never leave a baby alone in or near the tub, and always keep at least one hand on her body at all times.

A

How to swaddle a baby? (5 steps)

A
  1. Spread the babys swaddle blanket out on a flat surface in the shape of a diamond with one corner pointing up. Fold the top corner down about 6 inches.
  2. Place the baby face up with their head above the folded edge of the blanket.

Step 3. Straighten the baby’s left arm so that its dangling down then take the left side of the blanket and wrap it over her left arm and chest. Tuck the blanket underneath her right arm and her back. At this stage, your baby’s left arm should be covered and her right arm is free.

Step 4. Bring the bottom corner of the blanket up over your baby’s body and tuck it under the first fold, below her chin. Gently straighten your baby’s right arm down like you did with the left. Be careful to wrap baby snugly, but not too tightly.

Step 5. Pull the right side of the blanket over your baby’s body and tuck it snugly under her left side. Twist the remaining piece of blanket at the bottom and tuck it under your baby. Again, make sure the swaddle isn’t too loose or too tight.

What are some important things to consider when swaddling a baby? (4 items)

  1. The swaddle shouldn’t be too tight. You should be able to place two to three fingers between your baby’s chest and the blanket, and the blanket should be loose around her hips so she can move her legs freely.

A

Bluish or redish swelling on the bride of the nose which is a non-cancerous birthmark cause by abnormal growth of blood vessels. They will usually go away on their own between 5-10 years old.

What are the benefits of the vernix caseosa?

A

Its a thick white substance which helps form a barrier between the skin and amniotic fluid. During labor it helps as a natural lubricant to minimize friction when they go down the birth canal and after delivery it helps the baby retain moisture and helps avoid bacterial functions. For mothers it can help perineal wound healing.

A
