baba black sheep Flashcards
Natural Resource
materials from the Earth that are used to support life and meet people’s needs
Renewable Resource
those resources that continue to exist despite being consumed or can replenish themselves over a period of time even as they are used.
Nonrenewable Resource
Once these resources are used up, they cannot be replaced
Fossil Fuel
made from decomposing plants and animals. These fuels are found in Earth’s crust and contain carbon and hydrogen, which can be burned for energy.
Nuclear Fission
a nuclear reaction in which a heavy nucleus splits spontaneously or on impact with another particle, with the release of energy.
Nuclear Fusion
a nuclear reaction in which atomic nuclei of low atomic number fuse to form a heavier nucleus with the release of energy.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle
Fuel cell electric vehicles are powered by hydrogen. They are more efficient than conventional internal combustion engine vehicles and produce no waste
Solar Energy
radiant energy emitted by the sun.
Wind Energy
electrical energy obtained from harnessing the wind with windmills or wind turbines.
Hydroelectric energy
a form of energy that harnesses the power of water in motion such as water flowing over a waterfall to generate electricity.
Biomass
organic matter used as a fuel, especially in a power station for the generation of electricity.
Gasohol
a mixture of gasoline and ethyl alcohol used as fuel in internal combustion engines.
Geothermal Energy
heat energy from the earth
Petroleum
a liquid mixture of hydrocarbons that is present in certain rock strata and can be extracted and refined to produce fuels including gasoline, kerosene, and diesel oil
Natural Gas
a fossil energy source that formed deep beneath the earth’s surface.
