BA cylinders
What is the ‘working duration of a SDBA set?
31 Mins
BA cylinders
What is the safety margin duration of an SDBA set?
12 Mins
BA cylinders
When is it accepatable to test a SDBA cylinder without a contents gauge?
Cylinders can be changed at an incident without using a contents gauge.
BA cylinders
What capacity (water volume) is an SDBA cylinder?
8 Litres
BA cylinders
What are the charged contents of a SDBA cylinder?
Contains 2160 litres of compressed breathable air when charged to 300 bar.
BA cylinders
How frequency are SDBA & EDBA cylinders hydraulically tested?
Every 5 Years
BA cylinders
What is the design life of a SDBA cylinder?
30 Years
BA cylinders
What gives a BA cylinder its strength?
To give the cylinder the desired mechanical strength and light weight the liner is over-wrapped
with carbon fibre and then a layer of glass fibre is applied over the carbon to enhance the
resistance to abrasion and cut damage.
BA cylinders
What is a BA cylinder constructed of?
Aluminium & carbon
BA cylinders
Where would you find the hydraulic test date?
It’s a printed label on shoulder of cylinder
BA cylinders
What do the black & white shoulders on a BA cylinder denote?
Black and white painted shoulders (denotes breathable air).
BA cylinders
How must BA cylinders be transported
Cylinders are only to be transported in purpose built boxes/racks and fitted with red protective plastic blank cap.
BA cylinders
How must a BA cylinder be carried?
Personnel must only carry one cylinder at a time. They should be carried vertically ensuring that a firm grip is taken around the cylinder neck

BA cylinders
How should a cylinder cover be cleaned?

If the cylinder cover requires cleaning, the outside of the cover should be washed using warm water and mild detergent. Stubborn marks can be removed using a nail brush.
BA cylinders
What capacity (water volume) is an EDBA cylinder?
Cylinder volume is 6.8 litres x 2 (water capacity
BA cylinders
What are the charged contents of a EDBA cylinder?
Contains 3672 litres of compressed breathable air when charged to 300 bar.
BA cylinders
What is the design life of a EDBA cylinder?
The Design life is 15 years.
BA cylinders
What must a EDBA cylinder have before fitting to a set?
EDBA cylinders must have an orange cylinder cover fitted when on a BA set.

BA cylinders
How many EDBA cylinders packs is it acceptable to carry at once?
Personnel must only carry one cylinder pack at a time. The twin cylinder pack should be carried by the ‘handle’ fitted to the cylinder valve.

BA cylinders
What are your actions if when carrying out a cylinder acceptance test The body of the cylinder(s) is scored so as to reveal the carbon fibre matrix?
Treat the cylinder as defective !
BA cylinders
Is it acceptable to empty the remains of a used cylinder?
NO, Never fully empty a cylinder, as this will allow contaminants and/or moisture to enter the cylinder.
BA cylinders
What are your actions if when carrying out a cylinder acceptance test The valve assembly or outlet thread is damaged or contaminated with dirt/debris.?
Treat as defective !
BA cylinders
What are your actions if when carrying out a cylinder acceptance test The hydraulic test is out of date ?
Treat as defective !
BA cylinders
What are your actions if when carrying out a EDBA cylinder acceptance test the carrying handle is damaged ?
Treat as defective !
BA cylinders
How should an assembled EDBA set be carried?
Lifting and carrying the assembled EDBA set with its cylinder pack fitted is a two person lift.
