BA Flashcards
Describe the duration and usage SCBA Work Set?
- Effective duration exceeding 15 mins

Word for word not MC
BLAND
- Burning sensation on skin
- Lethargy
- Abdominal discomfort
- Nausea
- Dizziness
What type of BA does ACTF&R use?
Open circuit
A breath is initiated at what level of CO2?
4%
What exchanges oxygen and CO2 in and out of blood?
Alveoli
Describe Stage 1 Control Board?
- Incident is small and unlikely to be protracted
- Maximum 4 BA wearers
Describe Stage II Control Board?
4-12 BA wearers working in risk area
What are the BA Control equipment? (5)
Word for word not MC
- A tally tag for each wearer
- Electronic timer clocks
- Stage I Control Board
- Stage II Control Board
- Main Control
What are the entrapment procedures? (6)
Word for word not MC
- Send radio signal to Entry Control Officer
- Activate DSU if fitted
- Remain calm and avoid exertion to maximise air
- If charged branch available, saturate any combustible material to avoid spread of fire
- Find safe space near wall, pillar or structural support where a rescuer can locate you
- Air consumed should not exceed 10 lpm
What is the minimum crew for BA?
2 people
What are the alarm signals of the DSU?
Pre-alarm - 18-23 secs of no motion, 4 red intermittently pulsing LEDs and progressively louder audio
Alarm - 30-35 secs of no motion, 4 red constant flashing LEDs and loud audio alarm
What are 2 things that can cause oxygen deficiency in an atmosphere? Not MC
- Consumption of O2, eg. combustion
- Displacement of O2- chemical agents being introduced to the atmosphere (dry chem, CO2 extinguishers)
What is the formula for calculating cylinder duration?
(In test MC, missing “consumption” answer was “none of the above”)
Water capacity x pressure x compression factor over consumption = full duration
If a cylinder is at 150 bar, what is the wording duration?
=13.25 minutes.
What pressure line does the rescue set come off?
Medium pressure line
Define the cylinder durations. (Word for word not MC)
Full Duration – the time taken for a fully charged cylinder to go from full to empty.
Working Duration – the time taken from the moment a cylinder is started until the low pressure warning whistle is sounded
Safety Margin – the time taken from when warning whistle starts sounding to the cylinder being completely exhausted
What are BA Cylinder markings? (10) (Need to know at least 3, not MC)
- Water capacity
- Test Date Due
- Fill Pressure
- Manufacturer Mark
- Specification Number
- Original Tare Mass
- Serial Number
- Date of Original Test
- Approval Number
- Test Pressure
What are the components of the Facemask? (6)
(Need to know 4 not MC)
- Speech Transmission Diaphragm
- Exhalation Valve
- Inner mask
- Polycarbonate Visor
- Head Harness & Neck Strap
- Demand Valve Port
When does the Warning Whistle sound?
55 BAR +-5 BAR
What is the purpose of the silicone inner mask? Not MC
- Reduces CO2 dead-space in mask
- Prevents fogging/ misting in mask
What does carbon monoxide do to haemoglobin?
Carbon monoxide has 200 times the affinity to haemoglobin, pushing oxygen off haemoglobin travelling through the blood stream
Name the components of a Scott Propak (9)
Word for word, need to know all, not MC
- Harness and backplate
- Cylinder band and clamp
- Cylinder connector assembly
- Pressure reducer
- Demand valve and supply hose
- Facemask
- Pressure gauge and warning whistle
- Rescue second mask attachment
- Cylinder
What are the 2 types of Compressed Air SCBA?
WORK SETS - have a nominal effective life exceeding 15mins
ESCAPE SET - nominal effective duration of less than 15mins
What is the purpose of Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)?
Needs to be word for word not MC
The function of breathing apparatus is to enable the wearer to work in an atmosphere that would not otherwise support life
What are the symptoms of carbon monoxide?
Word for word not MC
Headache
Unconsciousness
Nausea
Dizziness
What is the composition of the air we breathe?
Nitrogen = 78.09 before inhalation and 78.09 after exhalation
Oxygen = 20.95 before inhalation and 16.96 after exhalation
Carbon dioxide = 0.04 before inhalation and 4.03 after exhalation
What are 4 types of irrespirable atmospheres? (Must be word for word, not MC)
- Oxygen deficient
- Toxic gases and fumes
- Elevated temperature
- Smoke
For the BA control board what time is the BA clock set to?
30 mins
What does the chemical splash suit protect the wearer from?
Not MC.
The suit protects the wearers skin from being exposed to a harmful substance
What is the wearer of a BA chem-suit and splash suit protected from? Not MC
The wearer is protected inside the suit from liquids, solids or gaseous contaminants.
What is the purpose of establishing an Entry Control Point on perimeter of risk area? Word for word not MC
- Control entry and exit of BA wearers
- Monitor safety of BA wearers
- Ensure a response to an emergency involving BA wearers
- Maintain resources that support BA wearers
At what time does a BA wearer remove their tally tag from the BA board?
When they leave the warm zone.
Can the BA Chemsuit or splash suit be worn by another user at an incident?
No
What happens to a contaminated BA Chemsuit & slash suit after an incident? Not MC word for word.
It will be bagged and tagged and transported to the BA section for cleaning and testing. Tag will include firefighters name, number, station, incident number, what the contaminants are, etc.)
