B9 Respiration Flashcards
What do organisms need energy for?
Chemical reactions to build larger molecules
Movement
Keeping warm
What’s the respiration equation and which parts are the products and reactants?
Glucose + oxygen = CO2 + water
Products - CO2 & water
Reactants - glucose and oxygen
Where does respiration occur?
In the mitochondria
Is respiration endothermic?
No - Respiration is a series of exothermic reactions that occur in the mitochondria of living cells
Why are boy and girl energy needs different
- Girls are smaller than boys
- boys have more muscle cells = more mitochondria requiring fuel for aerobic respiration
Why are fingers used to measure pulse?
Because you have a pulse in your thumb and this could confuse readings
Why does your standing heart rate differ from your resting heart rate?
Gravity - heart has to work harder to move blood around the body
Increased workload - standing engages more muscle groups
Why do muscles store glucose as glycogen?
They save it so it can be converted rapidly to glucose during exercise.
What is the function of glucose?
To supply the cells with fuel needed for cellular respiration.
What is aerobic respiration?
Breakdown of glucose to release energy using oxygen
What is oxygen debt?
Volume of oxygen needed to breakdown lactic acid
What is anaerobic respiration?
Breakdown of glucose to release energy without using oxygen.
What is metabolism?
The sum of all of the reactions that take place in the cell or in the body
How are metabolic reactions controlled?
Enzyme-controlled process
What are two metabolic reaction that break down larger molecules?
Digestion
Respiration of sugars
