what is a non-communicable disease?
a disease that can not be spread and is usually developed because of a person’s genetics or life style
what is a carcinogen?
something that causes or greatly increases the chance of getting a non-communicable disease
give an example of a carcinogen.
examples:
- tar from smoking that increases the chances of cancers in the lungs and other diseases
- ethanol from alcohol that can cause things like liver diseases
- eating that can cause obesity
give 3 examples of lung disease
- lung cancer
- COPD
- bronchitis
what is the carcinogen in a cigarette which can cause lung disease
tar.
why does tar make it harder to breathe?
the build up of tar in the lungs can decrease the surface are of the alveoli in the lungs. because of this, it makes diffusion harder making it harder to breathe. tar can also narrow the airways to your lungs.

why is it bad to smoke while pregnant?
the carbon monoxide in the cigarette attached to the oxygen in the blood. meaning the red blood cells are carrying around carbon dioxide instead of oxygen. This can starve the baby of oxygen and lead to under weight babies and a higher risk of still births
why is it dangerous to drink and drive?
drinking slows down your reaction times as it affects your nervous systems. because of this, if you needed to brake suddenly for example, then you may not be able to do so in time because of the alcohol slowing your reaction times
