B7 - Ecology Flashcards
Ecosystem
The interaction of a community of living organisms with non-living organisms in an environment.
Plants compete for…
Light, space and water & minerals
Animals compete for…
Mates, food and territory
Interdependence
When species rely on one another to survive. If one species is removed from the environment, it can affect the whole community.
Stable community
All species and environmental factors are in balance so the population remains fairly constant.
What do plants rely on other species for?
Pollination and seed dispersal
Abiotic factors
temperature, living intensity, moisture levels, soil pH, mineral content, wind intensity and direction, co2 levels and oxygen levels
Biotic factors
Availability of food, new predators, new pathogens, one species outcompeting others
Environment
The conditions surrounding and organism; abiotic and biotic
Habitat
Place where organisms live eg. woodland, lake
Population
Individuals of a species living in a habitat
Community
Populations of a different species living in a habitat
Factors affecting rate of decay
Temperature, water and oxygen
Decomposition
Breakdown of dead organisms which releases mineral ions into the soil
Food chain
producer - primary consumer - secondary consumer - tertiary consumer
