Q

What is interdependence?

A

Organisms depending on each other for survival. When this happens, a community is formed.

Q

Sampling Process

A

1) Place quadrat in random positions in area.
2) Count number of chosen organisms in each quadrat.
3) Calculate mean and then multiply by total area to get an estimate for population.
4) Moving it along a transect allows you to observe changes in population density over a distance.

12
Q

Why is HIGH BIODIVERSITY good?

A

Makes a stable ecosystem as organisms will be able to depend on a greater number of other species for survival.

Q

What is happening to PEAT BOGS and why is this bad?

A

Being destroyed to make compost - bad as is reduces biodiversity of that ecosystem (microorganisms)

-BURNING PEAT RELEASES CO2.

Q

What does DEFORESTATION do?

A

Reduces biodiversity as it is then used for land.

17
Q

A PYRAMID OF BIOMASS INDICATES…

A

HOW MUCH BIOMASS IS TRANSFERRED BETWEEN TROPHIC LEVELS.

18
Q

Why is FOOD SECURITY becoming an issue?

A

-Change in diet
-Growing environment
-Cost of farming

19
Q

What does SUSTAINABLE FISHING ensure?

A

Ensures fish aren’t caught faster than they can breed to keep populations constant.
This is done by using fishing nets with large holes so baby fish will be let out.
