B7 Flashcards
What do organisms compete for?
Food, water, space, light, CO2/O2
What is interdependence?
Organisms depending on each other for survival. When this happens, a community is formed.
List abiotic factors
(non-living factors) ; light, temp, moisture, soil pH, CO2 and O2 concentration.
List biotic factors
impact of other organism on an ecosystem ; food/predators/prey/pathogens
Sampling Process
1) Place quadrat in random positions in area.
2) Count number of chosen organisms in each quadrat.
3) Calculate mean and then multiply by total area to get an estimate for population.
4) Moving it along a transect allows you to observe changes in population density over a distance.
What do FOOD CHAINS show?
Show the direction of biomass transfer between organisms.
What is the order of a food chain?
Producer -> Primary Consumer -> Secondary Consumer -> Tertiary Consumer
What is an APEX PREDATOR?
Apex predators are at the top of the food chain and have no natural predator.
CARBON IS RECYCLED WHEN..
AN ORGANISM DIES AND DECOMPOSES.
+ when they excrete CO2 whilst alive, which bacteria can do too.
Describe the processes of the water cycle
- Precipitation
- Runs into rivers and seas
- Evaporates
- Repeats
What is BIODIVERSITY?
Variety of species of organisms that exist in an ecosystem.
Why is HIGH BIODIVERSITY good?
Makes a stable ecosystem as organisms will be able to depend on a greater number of other species for survival.
What does HUMAN DEVELOPMENT result in?
Results in reduced biodiversity, due to destruction of habitats.
What is LAND needed for?
Land is needed for;
Building
Quarrying
Farming
Disposal of Waste
What is happening to PEAT BOGS and why is this bad?
Being destroyed to make compost - bad as is reduces biodiversity of that ecosystem (microorganisms)
-BURNING PEAT RELEASES CO2.
