Q

uses for glucose in plants?

A

glucose:

  • used for energy in respiration
  • provides energy to turn sugars and nitrates into amino acid proteins
  • used to make cellulose (main thing used in the structure of the cell wall)

Q

what test can we do to prove photosynthesis occurs in a leaf?

A

the starch test :

  • boil a small part of a leaf in water for a few minutes
  • then add the leaf to boiling alcohol to get rid of the chlorophyll that turns the alcohol green.
  • rinse the leaves of alcohol
  • add iodine solution to test for starch (if starch occurs photosynthesis is happening)

Q

what can farmers do to increase the yield of their crop?

A

give the plants more:
- light
- water
- increased CO2

Q

why is CO2 a limiting factor in photosynthesis?

A

1)this is because the plant gets to a certain stage where its enzymes are fully saturated

2) with less CO2 photosynthesis is limited

Q

is photosynthesis and exo or endothermic reaction?

A

its endothermic
it uses the light from the sun (takes in the energy) to react CO2 and water to make oxegen and glucose

Q

what is translocation?

A

translocation is the sharing of sugars round the plant

(because photosynthesis occurs in leaves, the sugars that are made have to be transported round the plant to be used as energy)

Q

what are the phloem vessels?

A

the phloem vessels are what is used to transport ‘cell sap’ round the plant (a combination of sugar and water)

the vessels also have small holes to only let things the right size through.

Q

what are the xylem tubes?

A
  • made of dead xylem vessels and supported by lignin
  • role: to transport water and mineral ions from the roots to the leaves so the water can be used in photosynthesis

Q

explain the role the stomata has in evaporation of water molecules?

A
  • all the water molecules that flow from the xylem vessel to the leaves are like a chain and this is known as the ‘transpiration stream’.
  • this means when water is evaporated from the stomata the stream is pulled onto the next few molecules and so on.
  • the stomata must always stay open to let CO2 in

Q

the rate of transpiration depends on what 2 factors?

A
  • light intensity - the more light the more open the stomata is meaning increased evaporation
  • tempreture - the higher the temp the more energy the water molecules have

both of these factors increase transpiration

Q

how do auxins work ?

A
  • auxins control growth and are found in the tips of roots and shoots
  • in the sun the auxins move to the shaded side of the plant meaning they only grow 1 side of the plant cells which is why plants bend towards the sun

Q

the roots are what tropic?

A

negatively phototropic (because they grow away from light)
and positively gravitropic because they grow down with gravity.
