B6 Flashcards
1
Q
What is a genetic variant?
A
- when mutations become established in population
- If advantageous it can be slected for(natural selection)-useful for survival
2
Q
What is a mutation?
A
- Change in your DNA code
- DNA triplet codes look like:ATG, TCG,GGT and so on, only includes A,T,C,G
3
Q
What is adaptation?
A
- This is when a characteristic makes an organism more likely to survive and reproduce
- Happens when a mutation takes place
4
Q
What is natural selection?
A
- Natural selection is a process where organisms that are better adapted to an environment will survive and reproduce
- Happens when a random mutation in DNA creates a new genetic variant in a population
- If advantageous it increases the likelyhood of the surviving of the organism and the reproduction
5
Q
What is selective breeding?
A
When individuals with desirable characteristics are selected and bred together to product an offspring with desirable characteristics
6
Q
What is evolution?
A
- The process of natural selection
- Can lead to speciation
- Populations become different over time due to different selction pressures(competition)
7
Q
What is asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction?
A
- Asexual production is when a species reproduces by itself, less variation but can mutations
- Sexual production when a species needs two parents to reproduce, more variarion
8
Q
What is biodiversity?
A
A combination of the diversity of living organisms, their genes and the ecosysten in which they live.
9
Q
What is food security?
A
being able to produce enough food for the human population to survive
