B5 Plant Nutrition Flashcards
What is nitrogen used to make?
Nitrogen is a component of protein.
What is photosynthesis?
Plants making carbohydrates from raw materials using the energy from light.
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + Water -> Glucose + Oxygen
Necessity for chlorophyll for photosynthesis
the chlorophyll can trap light energy and use it to make glucose
What is the balanced equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H20 —— (light and chlorophyll) ——> C6 H12 O6 + 6O2
Name the four tissues found in a leaf
upper epidermis
lower epidermis
spongy mesophyll
palisade mesophyll
What does chlorophyll do?
Chlorophyll transfers light energy into chemical energy in molecules for the synthesis of carbohydrates.
What is a cuticle?
barrier coating the outer surface of epidermal cells of organs
limits water loss
Outline the usages of carbohydrates made in photosynthesis
The carbohydrates are used as a source of energy, to grow. To use such carbohydrates, plants combine it wity oxygen to release energy, in a process called respiration.
How are carbohydrates stored?
Carbohydrates are stored as a long chain shaped form, called glucose. Glucose contain many chemical bonds and therefore store a lot of chemical energy.
Necessity for carbon dioxide and light for photosynthesis
carbon dioxide and light is used to produce oxygen and sugar
What do proteins contain?
Nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen
What is the cause of yellow spots on leaves?
Magnesium deficiency
Why do plants need nitrogen?
To make protein; growth
What happens to the plant if it lacks nitrogen?
Shows ungrowth
