B5 (homeostasis and nervous system) Flashcards
What is homeostasis ?
Regulation of internal and external body conditions
What does homeostasis control ?
Water levels, body temperature, body glucose levels
What are receptors?
Detect stimuli
What are effectors?
Muscles or glands which produce a response to the stimuli
Coordination centres include….
Brain and spinal cord
Coordination centres
Areas that recieve and process the information from receptors and send our signals to coordinate the response of the body. (Inc. brain, pancreas…)
Neurons
Special cells that pass an electrical impulse with information in along them.
Nerves
Bundles of hundreds/ thousands of neurons
What does CNS stand for?
Central nervous system
What is the CNS made of?
Brain + spinal cord
Sensory neurons
Cells that carry electrical impulses from your sense organs to CNS
Motor neurone
Cells that carry information from CNS to rest of body
Stimuli
Changes in environment
Reflexes
Automatic response
Synapses
Physical gaps between the neurons.
