B5 Communicable Disease Flashcards
Definition Health
A state of physical and mental wellbeing
Definition Pathogens
Micro-organisms that cause communicable disease
Bacteria method of damage
Release toxins
Pathogens Spreading Methods
People, Water, Air or direct contact
Disease spreading prevention
Being Hygeienic, destroying vectors, isolation and vaccinations
Measles
- Fever and Skin rash
- Fatal if complications arise
- Most young children are vaccinated
- Spread by inhalation of droplets of sneezes and coughs
- Virus
HIV
- Flu-like
- Attacks bodies immune system
- AIDS occurs when bodies immune system is disfunctional
- Spread by Sexual Contact or bodily fluid spread
Salmonella
- Fever, abdominal cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea
- Bacteria ingested in food in unhygeinic conditions
- UK poultry vaccinated
Gonnorhea
- Yellow or Green discharge from genitals and pain urinating
- STD
- Treated with anitbiotics or barrier contraception
TMV
- Mosaic pattern discolouration where they cannot photosynthesise
- Remove infected leaves or plants
Rose Black Spot
- Stunted growth as leaves are killed
- Spread by wind and water
- Treated with fungicides or removing infected leaves
- Fungal
Malaria
- Episodes of fever, potentially fatal
- Spread by vectors like mosquitos
- Prevention is preventing vectors from breeding and mosquito nets
White Blood Cell 3 functions
- Phagocytosis - Engulf pathogens
- Antibody production - attaching markers to pathogens
- Antitoxin production - neutralising toxins from bacteria
Symptomns of nitrate defiency
Stunted Growth. Needed for protein synethesis and therefore growth.
Symptomns of magnesium defiency
Chlorosis. Needed to make chlorophyll
Insect that can damage plants
Aphids. Ladybirds incouraged to populate fields to kill them.
Plant disease identification
- Reference to gardening manual
- Testing infected plants in a lab
- Using monoclonal antibodies for testing
Physical plant defence
- Cellulose cell walls
- Tough waxy cuticle on leaves
- Bark (layer of dead cells)
Chemical plant defence
- Anti-bacterial chemicals
- Poisons to deter herbivores
Mechanical plant defence
- Thorns and hairs deter animals
- Leaves that curl when touched
- Environmental mimicry
