B5 adaptive radiation Flashcards
Adaptive radiation
Important for ecological diversity. The diversification of a lineage into species that exploit a variety of different resource types and differ morphologically or physiologically.
Eustacy
Global change in sea level caused by ice melting or ocean temperatures changing affecting worldwide processes.
Isostacy
Earth’s crust floating on denser mantle below, thicker crusts float more while thinner crusts (like oceans) sink more. When weight changes the crust adjusts by sinking or rising.
Threespine sticklebacks
-Females become red during reproductive season
-From lakes, also build nests
-They change a lot depending on locations/niches (change how much bone they have, and size)
-This was tested by experimenting with them in two tanks (one with benthic enviro, the other with limnetic (open water with plankton). Then the growth rate was used as surrogate fitness.
-Different feeding techniques were used in the environments, feeding success is innate and cannot be learned.
-The two different types of sticklebacks would not survive in the others environment.
Anadromous
Migrate from saltwater to freshwater to breed
