B4.3 The Heart Flashcards
What does the heart consist of?
Four chambers with thick muscular walls surrounding it and veins and arteries coming in and out
What’s the key point to remember when looking at the heart?
You put the right side on the left and the left side in the right
Basically invert it
What are the top chambers called
Atria with each one being called an Atrium
What are the bottom chambers called
Ventricles with individual ones called ventricle
What are the two veins coming into the heart ?
Vena cava on the LHS of the page when looking at the heart
Pulmonary vein on the RHS of the page when looking at the heart
Where does the oxygenated blood come from?
The pulmonary vein as it’s coming back from the lungs
What do pacemaker cells do?
Produce small electrical impulses which causes the heart to contract
How does the heart get its supply of oxygenated blood?
Small arteries branching of the Aorta called coronary arteries which supply the muscle tissue of the heart with oxygen and nutrients
What an easy way of remembering the structures of the heart ? Think Atria and ventricles
A over V
This is because the atrium are above the ventricles in the heart
