B4.1.2 - Abiotic and biotic factors Flashcards
What are biotic factors?
The living components of an ecosystem
What are abiotic factors?
The non-living components of an ecosystem
How does light intensity affect communities?
The greater the light availability, the greater the success of a plant. Plants tend to grow successfully in different light intensities. For e.g. plants often have larger leaves in areas of low light
How does temperature affect communities?
Plants developed rapidly in warmer temperature as their metabolisms will be faster. Cold-blooded animals rely on the Sun to warm them up
How does the moisture level affect communities?
A lack of water causes most plants to wilt as it is needed to keep their cells, turgid which keeps plants upright. It is also needed for photosynthesis. Animals also need water to survive
How does soil pH affect communities?
Some plants species grow better in acidic soils such as ferns and other grow better in alkaline soils such as cucumbers and cauliflower
