B4.1.1 - Ecosystems Flashcards
What is an ecosystem made up of?
All the living organisms and physical conditions in an area
What are the organisms in an ecosystem collectively called?
Community
What is the area in which the organisms live in called?
Habitat
What is population?
The total number of organisms of each species
What three groups are organisms in a community divided into?
Consumers, producers and decomposers
Describe producer organisms.
Organisms that make their food by photosynthesis
Describe consumer organisms.
Organisms that cannot make their own food so they have to eat other organisms
Describe decomposer organisms.
A special group of consumers which gain their energy by eating on dead or decaying material
What is biomass?
The mass of living material present
How does the biomass of producer organisms increase?
Photosynthesis
How does the biomass of consumer organisms increase?
Eating producer organisms
What is a food chain?
A way of displaying what an organisms eats
What do the arrows in a food chain show?
The transferring of biomass (energy transfer)
What is each step in the food chain called?
A trophic level
What is the difference between a food chain and a food web?
In a food chain, it only shows organisms eating one food source
