B4.1 Adaptation to environment Flashcards
ADD SPECIFIC ADAPTATIONS AND FEATURES OF THE 6 BIOMES
Habitat
A place where organisms live
Organism
a single living thing
Population
A group of organisms of the same species living in the same place and time that are capable of interbreeding.
Community
A group of populations living and interacting with each other in a habitat
Abiotic factors
Physical, non-living factors in an environment. Influence where organisms can live or their distribution and the size of their populations.
Biotic factor
A living organism that shapes its environment (from google)
What are plant distributions effected by?
Temp, water availability, light intensity, soil salinity, soil pH and mineral concentrations
What are animal distributions effected by?
Water availability and temperature
Adaptations
Ways animals have evolved to survive various abiotic factors
Ecosystem
a community and its physical environment
Biomes
Collections of ecosystems that share similar climatic conditions and have similar vegetation patterns.
Convergent evolution
Organisms that aren’t genetically related adapt to the same types of environmental conditions and .˙. become similar to each other.
Limiting factor
An abiotic or biotic factor that limits population size and the types of species in a habitat.
Zone/ Range of tolerance
Refers to the range of environmental conditions in which an organism can survive, grow, and reproduce. For each environmental factor organisms have an optimal range, zones of stress and zones of intolerance.
Belt transect sampling
Number of species are estimated by placing quadrats at set distances along the transect. Organisms inside the quadrat are counted.
Line transect sampling
A line is laid on the ground between two points and all organisms touching the line are recorded.
What do hard coral have a symbiotic relationship with?
zooxanthellae, microscopic algae
Tropical rainforest conditions
High rainfall, high temperatures
