B4 Organising Plants and Animals Flashcards
What do red blood cells carry ?
Red Blood Cells carry Oxygen
What are 4 adaptations of RBCs
- Biconcaved shape gives a large surface area ( for gas exchange )
- No nucleus to give way for haemoglobin
- Contains HB meaning gives colour when reacts with oxygen.
- Flexible to get through small capillaries
RBC percentage composition
40-45%
White blood cell function
To fight disease
What 3 adaptions of WBCs ?
- Flexible shape to engulf microbes
- Antibodies which are proteins which attack and destroy pathogens
- Antitoxins which can release by the WBC to neutralise toxins
WBC percentage composition
< 1%
Platelets Function ?
Heal Wounds
Platelet functions
No nucleus
Protects skin and stops bacteria entering the blood
Small Fragments
Platelets Percentage composition
<1%
Plasma Function ?
Carries: Water Digested food Carbon dioxide Antibodies Hormones Waste products
Plasma Adaptations?
Liquid in which blood cels can float
Plasma Percentage Composition?
55%
Arteries function
Carry blood away from your heart to the organs
Capillaries Function ?
Link the veins and arteries
Veins Function
Carry blood from organs to heart
Arteries oxygen/ deoxygenated
Oxygenated
Capillaries oxygenated/ deoxygenated
Both
Veins oxygenated/ deoxygenated
Deoxygenated
Arteries size and structure
Large
Thick Walls
Capillaries size and structure?
Small
Thin Walls- One Cell Thick
Vein size and structure?
Large
Thin Walls
Do veins have valves ?
Yes
Why is double circulation in humans ?
One transport system carries blood from your heart to your lungs and back this allows oxygen and CO2 to be exchanged with the air in your lungs
The other transport system carries blood from your heart to all other organs and back
What are Stents ?
Stents are small mesh cylinders that are placed in a blocked blood vessel and expanded to allow blood to follow past the blockage.
