B4 - Organising animals and plants Flashcards
What do red blood cells do?
They travel around the body delivering air to the cells
What are red blood cells full of (apart from air)?
Haemoglobin
How are red blood cells adapted?
They are bio-concave disks - more space for haemoglobin
They have no nucleus - more space for haemoglobin
What do white blood cells do?
These are cells that fight bacteria
What types of white blood cells are there?
lymphocytes and phagocytes
What is blood plasma?
Blood plasma is a straw-coloured liquid that is important for transport.
Why is blood plasma important?
Blood plasma is important because it transports everything you need - and need to get rid of - around your body.
What’s in blood plasma?
The majority is water. The rest is blood cells, and different enzymes
What are Platelets?
These are small parts or fragments of cells that react together to form a blood clot.
How do Platelets react?
they have enzyme controlled reactions that cause a jelly like clot to form.
What are the thick muscles surrounding the lung called?
Intercostal muscles
Where is the diaphragm in relation to the respiratory system?
The bottom of the lungs, just above the abdomen.
What does a lung do?
A lung supplies oxygen to the blood, and disposes of useless CO2.
What is the Oesophagus?
The throat, where air travels down.
