B4: Organising Animals and Plants Flashcards
What is Plasma
Plasma is a yellow liquid that transports waste products like Carbon dioxide and urea
What is urea
Urea is excess proteins which transported from the liver to the kidney and is removed by urine
What shape is a Red Blood Cell and why
A red blood cell is a bi-concave to increase surface area for diffusion
What is haemoglobin
Haemoglobin is a red pigment
Why do RBC’s have no nucleus
RBC’s have no nucleus which allows more space for haemoglobin
Are White Blood Cells bigger than RBC’s and explain why or why not
White blood cells are bigger than RBC’s and is part of the immune system that protects the body from harmful microbes and pathogens
What to WBC’s produce
They produce antibodies
What it the process
They produce antibodies to fight pathogens by coming across an antigen on the surface of a pathogen. It then produces antibodies so the pathogen can be found by other WBCs and be destroyed. Each antigen is specific to an antibody. Also they produce antitoxins to counteract toxins and engulf pathogens (phagocytosis)
What are Platelets
Platelets are small fragments of cells that help the blood clot and prevent bleeding
What does blood clotting help skin do
Blood clotting helps new skin to grow
