B4: community level systems Flashcards
Define ecosystem
An ecosystem is where all the organisms live in an area, including all the non-living conditions.
What is the Carbon cycle?
The carbon cycle shows how carbon is recycled
Other than carbon, what else do plants take in?
- hydrogen
- nitrogen
- oxygen
How is carbon taken in by plants?
Carbon is taken in by plants through photosynthesis
What is the carbon from Co2 used for?
Green plants use carbon from co2 to make carbohydrates, proteins and fats
What factors release CO2 in the air?
- respiration from plants
- respiration from plants
- burning product made from plant or
animals - Fossil fuels
- Co2 released from decay
What is the nitrogen cycle?
Nitrogen cycle is where nitrogen is recycled
What percentage of nitrogen gas is there in the atmosphere
78%
Where do plants get nitrogen from?
soil
What does nitrogen have to be turned into before plants take them in?
Nitrates
what is nitrogen fixation?
nitrogen fixation is the process of turning N2 from the air into nitrogen compounds in the soil which plants can use.
What are the 4 types of bacteria involved in the nitrogen cycle?
- Decomposer
- Nitrifying bacteria
- Nitrogen fixing bacteria
- Denitrifying bacteria
What do decomposers do?
They break down protein in plants and animals and urea in animal waste into ammonia.
What does nitrifying bacteria do?
It turns ammonia ions in decaying matter into nitrates
What does nitrogen-fixing bacteria do?
It turns turns nitrogen from the atmosphere into nitrogen compounds that plants can use.
