B4- bioenergetics Flashcards
The word equation for photosynthesis ?
Carbon dioxide+water——glucose+oxygen
Remember in chlorophyll and in the presence of light
Symbol equation
6co2+6H20–C6H12O6+6O2
Where does photosynthesis takes place?
Chloroplast in the green plant cell
What’s chlorophyll?
A green pigment that absorbs sunlight
What reaction is photosynthesis
Endothermic
Five main ways glucose is used?
-for respiration
-making cellulose
-making amino acids
-stored as oils or fats
-stored as insoluble startch
What are the limiting factors of the rate of photosynthesis?
-intensity of light
-concentration of Co2
-temperature
When are they limiting?
Light— at night
Winter— temperature
Warm and bright— carbon dioxide
How does light slow down the rate of photosynthesis on a graph?
1)As the light level is raised the rate of photosynthesis increases
2)When it’s reaches the plateau light will no longer be a limting factor
3)Now carbon dioxide or temperature is the limiting factor
How does carbon dioxide slow down the rate of photosynthesis?
1)as with light intensity the amount of CO2 will only increase up to a point
2)When it reaches the plateau (straight line on the graph) CO2 is not a limiting factor must be temperature.
How does temperature effect the rate of photosynthesis on a graph?
1)Temperature is usually the limiting factor because if it’s too low enzymes which are needed for photosynthesis work slower
2)If it’s too hot the enzymes will be damaged
3)This happens at about 45degree
What’s the inverse square law that links light intensity and distance?
Light intensity (then put a symbol that shows proportional to) 1 divided by distance squared
Use the inverse square law to calculate the light intensity when the lamp is 10cm from the pondweed:
1 divided 10 squared = 0.01a.u
a.u— stands for arbitrary units
