B4 Flashcards
What are the components of blood
Unique tissue
Based on plasma
How much blood does an avrage person have
4.7-5 litres
What does plasma do
Carries red and white blood cells and platelets.
Biconacave discs that transports oxygen around the body. No nucleus anc packed with haemoglobin. Has an increased surface area to volume ratio for diffusion.
Red blood cells
Bigger than red blood cells. Form part of the body’s defence system. Engulfs and digests invading bacteria and viruses
White blood cells
Small fragments of cells. No nucleus. Help blood to clot at a wound
Platelets
Carry blood away from heart to organs. Stretch as blood forces through. Blood spurts rapidly through them when heart beats
Arteries
Carries blood away from organs towards your heart. Blood is mainly always low in oxygen. Dont have a pulse. Thin walls.
Veins
They form a huge network of tiny vessels linking the arteries and the veins. Narrow with very thin walls. Enables oxygen and glucose to diffuse easily. Substances produces by your cells pass easily into the blood through the walls of the capillaries (carbon dioxide)
Capillaries
In the starch test, what two solutions did we add to the test tubes at the begining of the experement?
Amylase solution and pH buffer solution
After adding the buffer and starch, what colour should the iodine solution droped on be?
Blue-black
How do you recored the time taken for the amylase to fully digest the starch?
Multiply the number of drops by 30 (as each drop equals 30 seconds of reaction time)
How do you work out the rate?
100/time
What is the independent variable of the starch experiment?
pH level
What is the dependent variable of the starch experement?
Reaction rate
