B3.1 Flashcards
Are the urea, ions and water diffused or filtered out of the blood?
Filtered
Is the filtering in the kidneys under high or low pressure?
High
How is urea produced?
The breakdown of amino acids in the liver
What is ultrafiltration?
High pressure filtering of water, urea, ions and glucose out of the blood into the Bowman’s capsule (in the kidney)
Why aren’t proteins and blood cells filtered out of the blood?
They are too big to fit through the glomerulus and the Bowman’s capsule
What is reabsorbed into the blood?
All of the glucose and sufficient water to maintain the right water content in the body
What hormone controls how much water is reabsorbed?
ADH
What substances are not reabsorbed?
Urea and excess water
What type of feedback is water content control an example of?
Negative Feedback
How is ADH released?
The brain sends signals to the pituitary gland
Main 3 roles of the kidneys
Removal of Urea
Adjustment of Ion levels in blood
Adjustment of Water content in blood
