B3- Tissues and Organs Flashcards
Examples of tissues, organs and organ systems:
Tissues are a group of cells working together- muscular tissues to carry out certain functions: contract and relax
Organ: group of tissues working together to carry out a certain function.
E.G stomach: muscular tissue to churn the food, glandular tissue to produce digestive enzymes, epithelial tissue which covers outside of the stomach
Organ system: circulatory system, digestive system
What is the point of having a digestive system?
molecules in food are insoluble and they need to be broken down to form smaller insoluble molecules which the cells can digest
What is the role of the pancreas in the digestive system?
-makes and releases digestive juices containing enzymes to break down food
What are the adaptions of the small intestine?
- large SA and villi
- good blood supply
- short diffusion pathway
- muscular walls squeeze undigested food from the large intestine.
What are adaptions of the large intestine?
-water absorbed from undigested food forms faeces
What is the role of the liver?
-produces bile
