what is safeguarding?
- the action taken to promote the welfare of vulnerable people and protect them from harm
- protecting vulnerable people from abuse and maltreatment
- preventing harm to vulnerable people’s health or development
- ensuring children grow up with the provision of safe and effective care
4 principles of the Children Act 1989
4Ps
- paramount (the child’s welfare)

what is extremely concerning when dealing with safeguarding of children?

what factors can increase the risk to babies and children’s safety?
- domestic abuse
- mental health issues
- misuse of drugs / alcohol

what is the definition of a vulnerable adult?
- a person aged 18 or over who is, or maybe in need of, community care services by reason of mental or other disability, age or illness
- someone who is, or may be, unable to take care of themself, or unable to protect him or herself against significant harm or exploitation
describe the Mental Capacity Act and Care Act 2014 for Safeguarding Adults, what do they stand for?
- there is a duty to safeguard adults who can’t make their own decisions about safety
- always report suspicions of abuse of someone who lacks capacity
- underpinned by key principles
what are the categories of adult abuse?
- sexual
- psychological
- financial
- neglect and acts of omission
- physical
- domestic abuse
describe the ‘Prevent’ national program
- aim is to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism
- notice, check, share, refer
- ‘frontline staff should understand prevent and be able to recognise vulnerabilities to radicalisation and know where to go to get help’ -Home Office December 2014
pharmacist role in safeguarding
- ensure person is safe
- discuss concerns with supervisor
- if someone discloses info, do NOT promise to keep this secret
- get advice from safeguarding team (hospital or community)
- write your concerns and any actions immediately
- discuss with tutor / safeguarding lead
why would an adult victim’s wishes not to press charges be overridden in a safeguarding case?
if a child or unborn baby is involved eg. in domestic violence
