B3 - Organisation and The Digestive System Flashcards
Tissue
A group of cells with similar structure and function working together.
Organ
A collection of tissues. Multiple tissues work together to perform the same function.
Organ systems
A number of organs working together to acheve a common goal.
What is the digestive system?
The organ system responsible for consuming food and extracting nurtients and water out of it as well as getting rid of the waste products.
What are villi?
Small hair-like structures inside the small intestine designed to maximise the surface area for diffusion.
Carbohydrates
Organic compounds such as sugars and starch.
Lipids
Fats and oils
Proteins
A molecule made up of long chains of small units called amino acids.
Denatured protein.
The long chains of amino acids that make up a protein are folded, coiled,
and twisted to make specific 3D shapes. It is these specific shapes that
enable other molecules to fit into the protein. The bonds that hold the
proteins in these 3D shapes are very sensitive to temperature and pH, and
can easily be broken. If this happens, the shape of the protein is lost and it
may not function any more in your cells.
Functions of protein:
structural components of tissues such as muscles and tendons.
hormones such as insulin.
antibodies, which destroy pathogens and are part of the immune system.
enzymes, which act as catalysts.
