B3 - Organisation And Digestive System Flashcards
Function of Pancreas
Produces insulin used to control blood sugar levels
Passage of Food
Mouth 🔻 Oesophagus 🔻 Stomach 🔻 ⬅️ Pancreas - digestive juices are added 🔻 ⬅️ Liver - makes bile stored in gall bladder 🔻 Small Intestine 🔻 Large Intestine 🔻 Rectum 🔻 Anus
Digestion
Breaking down food that it is small enough and soluble enough to pass through the wall of the intestine.
Absorption
The process by which nutrients enter the blood.
Ingestion
Taking food into the alimentary canal i.e. eating.
Egestion
Removal of food from the body that cannot be digested i.e. solids.
Excretion
The separation and removal of metabolic waste from the body urea/carbon dioxide.
Biological Catalyst
Substances that increase the rate of chemical reactions without being used up.
Factors affecting enzyme action
- Surface Area
- Temperature - Increase in temperature increases reaction rate till an optimum. If it gets too hot (past the optimum), the enzyme denatures and stops functioning.
Bile
A fluid that is made and released by the liver and stored in the gall bladder.
It breaks down fatty acids.
Definition of a Tissue
A group of similar cells.
Definition of an Organ
A group of tissue working together to perform a specific function.
Function of a Large Intestine
Absorption of water into the blood.
Small Intestine
Digestion of fat
Function of a stomach
Production of hydrochloric acid.
