B3 - meiosis + mitosis Flashcards
what is mitosis?
a process of cell division where 2 genetically identical daughter cells are produced
what is meiosis?
a process of cell division where 4 genetically different daughter cells are produced
where can meiosis ONLY take place?
in reproductive organs
- testes (males)
- ovaries (females)
what happens in the first stage of meiosis?
all chromosomes in the cell are copied
what happens during the second stage of meiosis?
the cell divides into two
what happens during the third stage of meiosis? what is formed?
- the two cells produced from the second stage then divide one more
- this forms the gametes
are chromosomes in gametes single or paired?
single
how many gametes are produced from one original cell in meiosis?
4 gametes produced
are the gametes produced in meiosis genetically identical (clones) or genetically different (variation)?
genetically different
what do both meiosis and mitosis require?
DNA replication
what is produced during mitosis?
2 genetically identical daughter cells
Which process occurs causing the divided cells in mitosis to become specialised?
differentiation - the process by which unspecialised cells become specialised
How many cells are produced from one fertilised egg, after 2 cell divisions by mitosis?
4
