B3 - Function of the urinary system Flashcards
what does the urinary system consist of ?
the urinary system consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder and the urethra
what is the structure of the urinary system ?
the urinary bladder is a hollow muscular organ that collects urine from the kidneys before disposal by urination
what is the function of the urinary system ?
the urine enters the bladder through the ureter and urine leaves the bladder via the urethra
what are the two types of blood vessels attached to the kidneys ?
the renal arteries + renal veins
what do the renal arteries do ?
the renal arteries deliver an oxygen rich blood supply to the cells in each kidney
what is the function of the renal veins ?
once the blood has been processed it leaves the kidneys via the renal veins and is transported to the vena cava back into to the heart
what are the two main functions of the kidneys in the excretory system ?
Excretion and osmoregulation
what is the function of excretion ?
the removal from the body of toxic waste products made in the cells during metabolism
what is the function of osmoregulation ?
the control of the body water by adjusting the solute concentration of the cells. this ensures the cells do not burst or shrink (which would affect the cell reactions)
