B3 Flashcards
What are the levels of organisation of cells?
Cells into tissues into organs into organ systems into organisms.
What is starch made of?
Simple sugars such as glucose joined together chemically.
How do you break down starch?
Enzymes catalyse the reaction with the site of mitochondria.
Job of starch
Starch is a good carbohydrate and the most common source of energy for organisms.
Job of protein
Proteins are needed for muscle formation as well as general body structure.
Job of lipids (fats)
Lipids provide insulation and is the most efficient source of energy storage. Also vital for cell membranes.
What are enzymes?
Enzymes are like pieces of a jigsaw made up of strings of amino acids.
How do enzymes work?
Enzymes are like pieces of a jigsaw made up of strings of amino acids. These ‘pieces’ only allow specific substrate molecules to fit in the ‘active site’. The enzyme works as a catalyst for reactions in cells and can break a large molecule apart as well as bonding two small molecules together. This is using the ‘lock and key’ method to form into a enzyme-substrate complex.
What are the 4 food tests?
Iodine for starch
Benedict’s solution for sugar
Ethanol for lipids (fats)
Biuret reagent for protein
What is the digestive system?
The digestive system is a muscular tubes that squeezes your food through it. It starts at one end with your mouth, and finishes with the other at the end of your anus
