B3 Flashcards
Active transport
The movement of substances across the cell membrane against concentration gradient using respiration energy
Osmosis
The movement of water molecules from a high concentration to a low concentration through a partially relieved permeable membrane and it is done within a concentration of water
Diffusion
The net passive particle movement from high concentration to low concentration
Transpiration
The process where water is transported from the roots to the leaves and results in evaporation at the Leaves
Translocation
The movement of sugars through a plant
Potometer
Apparatus which measures the rate of water
Mitochondrion
Organelles that produce energy with respiration
Vacuole
A large plant cell structure with watery sap and stores food or waste
Turgid
Tissues in a plant that become firm as it gains water in osmosis
Flaccid
Tissues in a plant are floppy as the plant lost water in osmosis
Equilibrium
Estate in which there are equal amounts of particles on each side of the cell membrane
Selectively permeable
Cell membranes that control what gets through
Stomata
The pores found mostly on the lower surfaces of the leaves that allowed the entry and exit of gases and water vapour
Passive
A process that does not require an input energy from respiration
Vascular bundle
Plant tissue which contains the transport of cells called xylem and phloem
Xylem
Plant cell involved in the transport of water and minerals
Cellulose
A substance made by plants that form the structure of their cell walls
Phloem
Plant cells involved in the transport of food, mainly sucrose
Cell wall
A tough protective structure made of cellulose that surrounds the cell membrane in the plant cells
Concentration gradient
The variation in concentration of a substance into different areas
Plasmolysis
State of a cell when it is flaccid and the cell membrane has detached from the cell wall because the vacuole and cytoplasm have shrunken
