b3 Flashcards
What does a Cytoplasm do?
The cytoplasm is where chemical reactions take place
What is the job of the cell membrane?
Allows movement into and out of the cell
What does the nucleus do and what does it contain?
The nucleus controls what the cell does and also contains the genetic information
Where is the Mitochondria and what occurs inside it? What affects the amount of Mitochondria a cell has?
Mitochondria is inside a cell. Respiration takes place inside mitochondria. Cells that have high energy requirements such as sperm cells, muscle cells and liver cells have higher amount of mitochondria as it needs more energy.
What does Mitochondria produce energy for?
Makes energy for the cell
Where are ribosomes located and what do they do?
Ribosomes are located in the cytoplasm. They are the site for protein synthesis.
What is inside the cell of every nucleus?
Chromosomes
What is a gene?
A gene is a section of a chromosomes that carries information a particular characteristic and controls it.
What do chromosomes carry and in the form of what?
They carry genetic information in the form of genes
What forms the genetic code?
The order or sequence of the bases provide the genetic code.
What is the genetic code and what does it do?
Genetic code is instructions for the cell and it controls the cell activity
Most genes have different sequences of the bases, True or false. If false what’s the correct answer?
False. All genes have different sequences of the bases.
What contains the genetic code?
DNA molecules contain the genetic code.
What is a chromosome?
A chromosome is a long strand of DNA molecules.
What are genes made up of (material)
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
What are gametes and why are they so special regarding chromosomes?
Gametes are sex cells. They have individual chromosomes therefore have exactly half the amount of normal cells.
What production does DNA control?
Production of proteins
The information in genes is in the form called what?
Genetic code.
How many strands are DNA made up of?
2 strands
What shape or pattern are DNA patterned in?
Double helix
What are genetic instructions in a form of and what are they made up of?
They are in a form of a chemical code made up of 4 bases.
Which strands combine with which strands?
A always bonds with T, C always bonds with G.
What is this bonding of DNA strands called?
Complementary base pairing
Each gene codes is for a particular ……….. (finish it off)
Each gene code is for a particular protein
What are the names of the two scientists that worked out DNA?
Watson and Crick
How did they make this structure?
They used data from other scientists to build a model of DNA
