B3 Flashcards
What is a communicable disease?
A disease that can easily spread.
What are pathogens?
They are microorganisms that enter the body and cause communicable (infectious) diseases.
Who can be infected by pathogens?
Plants and animals.
What are bacteria?
Very small cells which can reproduce rapidly inside your body. They can make you feel ill by producing toxins (poisins) that damage your cells and tissues.
How small are bacteria?
About 1/100th of the size of your body cells.
Types of pathogen?
Bacteria
Viruses
Protists
Fungi
Are viruses cells?
No.
How small are viruses?
They’re tiny -about 1/100th of the size of a bacterium.
What do viruses do inside of your body?
They can reproduce rapidly inside of your body.
They live inside your cells and replicate themselves, proding many copies of themselves. This cell will usually then burst, releasing all the new viruses. This cell damage is what makes you feel ill.
What are protists?
Protists are single-celled eukaryotes. Most of them are single-celled. Some are parasites, which live on or inside other organisms and can cause them damage. these are often transferred to the organism by a vector, which doesn’t get the disease itself e.g. an insect that carries the protist.
What are the types of fungi?
Some fungi are single celled. Others have a body which is made up of hyphae (thread like structures).
What can hyphae do?
The hyphae can grow and penetrate human skin and the surface of plants, causing diseases. They can also produce spores, which can be spread to other plants and animals.
What are the different ways by which pathogens can be spread?
WATER- Drinking or bathing dirty water
AIR- they can be carried in the air and can then be breathed in. Some airborne pathogens are carried in the air in droplets produced when you cough or sneeze.
DIRECT CONTACT- Some picked up by touching contaminated surfaces, including the skin.
What is cholera and how is it spread?
It is a bacterial infection that’s spread by drinking water contaminated with the diarrhoea of other sufferers.
What is the influenza virus and how is it spread?
It is a virus that causes flu. It is spread through airborne pathogens, that are carried in the air in droplets produced when you cough or sneeze.
