B2.2.2 - Circulatory system Flashcards
What is our circulatory system made up of?
Our heart and our blood vessels
How does blood in our body help?
It transports substances around your body to the cells that need them. This includes the oxygen and glucose needed for respiration. Blood also carries away waste products such as carbon dioxide
How many times does blood flow through the heart during each circuit of the body?
It flows through the heart twice
What is deoxygenated blood?
It is blood with lows levels of oxygen
What is the blood cycle?
Your heart pumps blood to the body organs and tissues, here oxygen and glucose diffuse out of the blood into the cells. CO2 diffuses out of the cells into the blood. The blood them travels back to the heart which them pumps it to the lungs. In the lungs CO2 diffuses out of the blood to be removed from the body and oxygen diffuses in. The blood returns to the heart and the cycle starts again
What are the 3 types of blood vessels?
Arteries, vessels and veins
What is the structure of an artery?
It has a thick outer wall, thick layer of muscle and elastic figures, small lumen and smooth lining
What is the structure of a vein?
It has a fairly thin outer wall, thin layer of muscle and elastic fibres, large lumen and smooth lining
What is the structure of a capillary?
It has a very small lumen and a wall made of a single layer of cells
What arteries do in the body?
They carry blood away from the heart under high pressure
What do veins do in the body?
They return blood to the heart. (They habe valves to stop blood flowing the wrong way)
What do capillaries do in our body?
They link arteries and veins in tissues and organs. They form a network so that every cell is close to a capillary.
