B2.2- Tissues, organs and organ systems Flashcards
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function
What are examples of tissues in mammals?
- muscular tissue
- glandular tissue
- epithelial tissue
What does the muscular tissue do?
Contracts to move whatever it’s attached to- moves the stomach wall to churn up the food
What does the glandular tissue do?
Makes and secretes chemicals like enzyme and hormones- makes digestive juices to digest food
What does the epithelial tissue do?
Covers some parts of the body- covers the outside and inside of the stomach
What’s the role of the glands?
Produce digestive juices
What’s the role of the stomach and small intestine?
To digest food
What’s the role of the liver?
To produce bile
What’s the role of the small intestine?
Absorb soluble food molecules
What’s the role of the large intestine?
To absorb water from undigested food and leave faeces
What is the process by which cells become specialised for a certain job called?
Differentiation
What’s the role of mesophyll tissue?
Where most of the things in photosynthesis occur
What’s the role of xylem and phloem?
Transport things like water, mineral ions and sucrose around the plant
What’s the role of epidermal tissue?
Covers the whole plant
