B2.2 - Photosynthesis Flashcards
Where does photosynthesis happen?
Photosynthesis happens inside the chloroplasts in plant cells and algae. Chloroplasts contain a green substance called chlorophyll, which absorbs sunlight and uses its energy to convert carbon dioxide (from the air) and water (from the soil) into glucose. Oxygen is also produced as a by-product.
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
Which product produced by photosynthesis is ‘food’ for the plant?
Glucose.
Name the part of a plant cell that contains chlorophyll.
Chloroplasts.
What role does chlorophyll play in photosynthesis?
It absorbs light energy from the sun.
Which gas is used in photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide.
What is the by-product of photosynthesis?
Oxygen.
What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process that produces ‘food’ in plants and algae. The ‘food’ it produces is glucose (a sugar). Plants use glucose for a number of things, such as making cell walls and proteins.
What is a limiting factor and photosynthesis and what factors limit photosynthesis?
Limiting factors of photosynthesis are factors which stops photosynthesis from happening any faster. The rate of photosynthesis is affected by the intensity of light, the volume of carbon dioxide and the temperature.
