B2.12 Enzymes Flashcards
Describe how enzymes catalyse chemical reactions occurring inside and outside living cells
In DNA replication the enzymes separate the two strands. And a different enzyme joins the new bases together. Making two complete and identical DNA molecules. Enzymes are unchanged so they can repeat actions
Used in protein synthesise when a different enzyme catalyses each reaction I.e. When a protein is built from amino acids using the order of bases in the DNA code as a guide.
Some enzymes are used in digestion and laundry detergents to help digest food and other large molecules that stain food. As carbohydrates, proteins and fats are much too large to move around the digestive systems so enzymes are needed to help break down this
What are enzymes?
A biological catalyst. (Causes reactions to go faster without itself being changed by the reaction.
