B2.1 Flashcards
What are chromosomes?
Chromosomes are structures in the nucleus that contain genetic information.
What is the role of chromosomes in cells?
They carry genes that determine the characteristics of an organism.
What is DNA?
DNA is the molecule that makes up chromosomes.
What is a gene?
A gene is a small section of DNA that codes for a particular characteristic.
How many chromosomes are in a human body cell?
46 chromosomes.
What happens during the cell cycle?
The cell grows, replicates its DNA, and then divides into two identical daughter cells.
What is mitosis?
Mitosis is the process of dividing the chromosomes into two identical sets.
Why is cell division important for growth and repair?
It allows organisms to grow, replace damaged cells, and repair tissues.
What happens to the chromosomes during mitosis?
During mitosis, the chromosomes condense, line up, and are pulled apart to opposite ends of the cell.
