B2 - Organisation Flashcards
What is a group of similar cells
A group of similar cells
What is a group of similar tissues
A group of similar tissues is an organ
What is a group of different organs
A group of different organs is an organ system
What is a group of organ systems
A group of organ systems makes an organism
Examples of organ systems
Digestive System
Respiratory System
Circulatory System
Nervous System
What is the purpose of the digestive system
Breaking down food and absorbing it into the bloodstream
What is the name of an enzyme and substrate when they are joined together
Enzyme-Substrate Complex
What do enzymes do
Break down big food molecules into smaller ones so they can be digested
How does bile help in the digestion of foods
It increases the surface area of fats meaning they can be more easily digested
How does hydrochloric acid help with digestion
Hydrochloric Acid helps with digestion by making the stomach acidic so protease enzymes can work
Why are the walls of the left ventricle thicker than the right ventricle
The walls of the left ventricle are thicker than the walls of the right ventricle because the oxygenated blood has to go to the whole body so the left ventricle has to pump the blood harder so it can get to the whole body
What is Iodine testing for
Starch
What is Benedicts solution testing for
Sugar
What is Biurets solution testing for
Protein
What is ethanol testing for
Fats
What is the difference between communicable and non‑communicable diseases
Communicable diseases can spread from person to person (or between animals and people) but non‑communicable diseases can’t
How can too much bad cholesterol in the bloodstream cause health problems
Too much bad cholesterol in the bloodstream can cause fatty deposits to form inside arteries, which can lead to coronary heart disease
What is the function of red blood cells
Collecting oxygen from the lungs and bringing it to cells
What are 3 adaptions of the red blood cells
They are packed with haemoglobin to bind to oxygen, they don’t have a nucleus so there is more room for haemoglobin, they have a biconcave shape to increase the surface area for diffusion to happen
What is the function of white blood cells
They are part of the bodies defence system
What are transported in the xylem
Water and mineral ions
Name two organs of the digestive system that produce both proteases and lipases
The pancreas and small intestine
How are waste products such as carbon dioxide and urea transported in the blood
Dissolved in the plasma
What is a tissue
A tissue is a group of cells that work together to do something
Where is bile stored
Bile is made in and released by the liver but stored in the gallbladder
Why does the heart have valves
To stop the backflow of blood
What is a non-communicable disease
A disease that cannot be spread by pathogens
Which type of tumour can spread
Malignant Tumours can spread
What is a risk factor of a disease
A risk factor is something that contributes to a higher risk of getting a disease
What type of cell opens and closes the stomata
Guard Cells open and close the stomata
What is the function of phloem
Transporting food to the leaves
