B2 - Classification Flashcards
What are the kingdom divisions down to species?
Koalas play crochet on fluffy ground sometimes.
Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.
What are the 5 kingdoms?
Animals, plants, fungi, protoctista, prokaryotes
What are the 4 classes of the arthropods and what are their characteristics ?
Myriapods (e.g millipedes and centipedes )
- long, segmented body
- each body segment has legs
Crustacea ( e.g crabs and woodlice )
- body covered in hard outer coating
- ten legs
Arachnids ( e.g spiders and scorpions)
- body divided into two sections
- eight legs
Insects ( e.g bees and butterflies )
- body divided into three sections
- six legs
- usually two pairs of wings
What are the two systems biologists use to classify organisms?
Natural - based on evolutionary links, so organisms are grouped together if they have common ancestry.
Artificial – based on visible features, making a group of organisms easier to identify.
What are the problems with classification?
- may share characteristics from two groups.
- large range of organisms, and many organisms are quite similar.
- sometimes individuals from two closely related species can breed together. This type of offspring is called a hybrid.
- There are many species of bacteria, and they do not reproduce with one another. They reproduce asexually. Biologists still classify them as different species, based on their characteristics.
- Evolution means that organisms are slowly changing. They can eventually become new species.
Define species.
A species is a group of similar organisms that are capable of interbreeding to produce fertile offspring.
What is the binomial naming system?
Two part name
First = genus
Second = species
