B2- CELLS Flashcards
1
Q
3.1.4 Enzymes
What is an enzyme?
A
Enzymes are biological catalysts of which speed up reactions. They alter chemical reaction processes without undergoing permanent changes themselves. They only speed up reactions, not create them.
2
Q
3.1.4 Enzymes
What is an enzyme’s effect on activation energy?
A
Each enzyme lowers the activation energy of the reaction it catalyses.
3
Q
3.1.4 Enzymes
How is an enzymes properties determined?
A
The properties of an enzyme relate to the tertiary structure of its
active site and its ability to combine with complementary substrates
to form an enzyme-substrate complex.
4
Q
3.1.4 Enzymes
What are the main factors that affect the enzyme activity?
A
- enzyme concentration
- substrate concentration
- concentration of competitive and of noncompetitive inhibitors
- pH
- temperature.
