B2-Cell Division Flashcards
4 examples of when the cell needs to divide
When the organism nees to: Grow, Replace worn out cells, Repair damaged tissue and asexually reproduce
Interphase
1st stage of the cell cycle, replication of DNA to form copies of each chromosome and the synthesis of the new sub-cellular structure
Prophase
First stage of mitosis and second stage in the cell cycle- It is the movement of chromosomes once DNA replication has occured, each one is identical
Metaphase
Second stage of mitosis, third stage of cell cycle- The chromosomes line up across the centre of the cell and the spindle fibres join to centromere
Anaphase
Third stage of Mitosis, fouth stage of cell cycle- The two identical copies of chromosomes seperate and move to opposite ends of the cell
Telophase
Last stage of Mitosis (fourth) and 5th stage of cell cycle- Two new sets of nuclei form as well as membranes that form around the chromosome sets
Cytokinesis
Last stage of cell cycle (6th)- Two new identical daughter cells are formed containing the exact same DNA
A Zygote
A fertilised egg cell
Two main types of stem cells
Embryonic and adult stem cells
Where does cell division take place in the plant
The meristems
Cloning
The procution of identical offspring
How many cells do you have in your body when you are an adult
An estimated 37.2 trillion cells
Embryo
A ball of cells that the zygote divides into
Differention in cells
Process of changing from one cell type to another
Zones of the meristem
Zone of cell division, zone of cell elongation, sone of cell differentiation
