B2 Flashcards
Where are the lungs located?
The lungs are located in the thorax (the top part of the body which is separated from the lower part of the body by the diaphragm)
What are the lungs protected by?
The ribcage
What are the lungs surrounded by?
Pleural membranes
Where does the air we breathe go through?
It goes through the trachea and splits into two tubes called bronchi, one going to each lung
what does the bronchi split into?
smaller tubes called bronchioles
where do the bronchioles end at?
they end at small bags called alveoli where the gas exchange takes place.
What do the alveoli carry out?
Gas exchange in the body
what are alveoli surrounded by?
a network of blood capilaries
where does oxygen diffuse out of in the body?
out of the alveolus and into the blood where there is low concentration.
where does carbon dioxide diffuse out of in the body?
out of the blood and into the alveolus
What happens when the blood reaches the body cells
oxygen is released from the red blood cells and diffuses into the body cells. At the same time, carbon dioxide diffuses out of the body cells and into the blood
How to calculate breathing rate
breaths per minute = number of breaths / number of minutes
