- overpopulation
- limited investment in argiculture
- often cereals are the only food (e.g rice) which do not contain a lot of protein

- EAR nor BMI take age, pregnancy etc. into account
- BMI muscle more dense than fat so muscular people may seem obese
- do not consider extreme cases
